WhatsApp may allow chat transfers using QR codes

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow Android users to transfer chat history from their old phones using a QR code.

WhatsApp allows chat migration between iOS and Android devices

WABetaInfoWell-known WhatsApp tipster publication discovered the new feature in the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android, which is available on the Google Play Store.

For those who don’t know, the above feature was reportedly first being tested in the WhatsApp beta for the Android update in April 2023. Although the feature is still under development on WhatsApp beta for Android, it appears that WhatsApp is currently experimenting with another section to allow users to quickly transfer their chat history from old phones using QR codes.

This optional feature appears to be universal, designed to transfer chat history across different platforms, without relying on specific sections or methods.

“While this is purely speculation, this new section suggests that WhatsApp may be aiming to universally extend the migration process across all devices, as it doesn’t mention that the old phone has to be an Android device,” WABetaInfo The report said.

Currently, WhatsApp allows chat history migration between iOS and Android devices. However, this requires users to navigate to a specific section and use a physical cable to complete the process. Also, older Android versions do not support this migration feature, making this feature limited to users with newer Android operating systems.

The report further states, “The upcoming feature may aim to potentially enhance this capability by making the migration process universal across different platforms. However, more details are still awaited on the operation of this universal feature, and additional information is likely to emerge in the future as development progresses.”

Specific details regarding the implementation of this optional feature are not currently available, as it is still in development.

At the moment, details about the implementation of this optional feature are not available as it is still under development, and it will be available in future updates of the app.
