WhatsApp is preparing ‘Imagine Me’ feature to create personalised images using Meta AI: Report

Date:

WhatsApp recently expanded the rollout of its Meta AI chatbots in select markets including India and the US, and it appears that the instant messaging platform has started working on a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature. The Meta-owned messaging platform is reportedly developing a new ‘Imagine Me’ feature that will let users create AI-generated photos of themselves. The update has been spotted on the latest WhatsApp for Android beta release, which is available through the Google Play Beta program.

Feature tracker WABetaInfo found that the company is developing an optional feature that will allow users to create photos of themselves using Meta AI. The messaging service may ask users to upload some reference selfies when they first select the feature.

WABetaInfo says that it has found references to the upcoming AI-based ‘Imagine Me’ feature in the latest WhatsApp beta 2.24.14.13 update for Android, which is available via the Google Play Beta programme. The feature is still in the development stage and cannot be tested after installing the aforementioned beta version of WhatsApp on an Android phone.

How will WhatsApp’s new AI feature work?

The report includes a screenshot showcasing the new option, which helps users get an idea of what the feature will look like when it goes live. Once users take a set of photos, the Meta AI chatbot will create new AI images.

Users can ask Meta AI to create an AI image of themselves by typing “imagine me” in the Meta AI chat window. This functionality can be accessed in other chats by typing “@Meta AI imagine me”.

According to a screenshot of the feature, users will be able to choose new backgrounds and locations “ranging from the jungle to outer space” to add to their photos. This is expected to help create customized stickers. According to WABetaInfo, users can delete uploaded snaps anytime through the settings.

WhatsApp’s new personalised AI image-generating option is said to be optional and users may have to manually enable it in their settings. According to the feature tracker, it is likely to be available in a future update.

The company’s ChatGPT competitor Meta AI began rolling out in India last month. Apart from WhatsApp, the chatbot powered by the in-house Llama 3 Large Language Model (LLM) is currently available on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
