These are the best VR headsets, accessories, apps, and games for working and playing in the metaverse

The Meta Quest 3 (8/10, WIRED recommends) is a huge improvement over its predecessor in nearly every category — save the price. It’s got better specs in all areas — a slightly higher resolution, a faster processor, more RAM and the option for up to 512GB of internal storage — but the biggest change is the mixed reality upgrade. The previous model, the Quest 2, had outward-facing cameras for orienting yourself in the world and a pass-through feature that let you see your room to avoid obstacles. But the Quest 3 takes it several steps further, making immersive AR core to the experience.

For starters, pass-through cameras can now show you a color image instead of black and white. It’s also slightly higher-resolution, so it’s easier to tell what you’re looking at. It still looks somewhat like you’re watching a 2000s YouTube video of your living room, but it’s much better than not being able to see your surroundings at all.

This technology offers some new and innovative games and experiences. One of my favorites, PianoVision, is designed to help you learn piano by overlaying helpful information and even a piano roll onto a video of your actual, physical keyboard. This makes practicing the instrument a great experience. Guitar Hero-like experience, and this is something that wouldn’t be possible with VR alone.

Downside: The Meta Quest 3 is much more expensive than the Quest 2 (even after the latter’s midlife price hike). Starting at $500, it’s the equivalent of buying an entire game console, so it’s not much of an impulse buy, but if you’re looking for the best stand-alone VR headset with the largest library of games and apps that supports both VR and mixed reality, the Quest 3 is the best headset out there.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that the company behind all of this is Meta (aka Facebook). You might not like this, as Facebook doesn’t have a great history of managing user data (not to mention how that data is used). If you’re looking to buy a VR headset, the Meta Quest 3 is still our top choice. Just try not to buy too many things from the Meta store. Shop for deep discounts. steady In the marketplace, like Steam (which also supports the Quest 2).

It supports room-scale VR, pass-through mixed reality, can be operated with or without a PC, and comes with two controllers.
