The right wing is already demonizing Kamala Harris

Date:

Far-right communities online are already demonising Vice President Kamala Harris amid speculation she could replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate in the US election.

But rather than focusing on his policies, experience or ability to deliver, these vicious attacks have focused on reviving old conspiracy theories about his sex life, his race and his qualifications to be president.

The attacks come from former President Donald Trump. “He just gave up the election, you know — he’s dropping out of the race,” Trump said of Biden in a video first reported by the Daily Beast last week and later posted by Trump on his Truthout social account. “That means we have Kamala,” Trump added. “She’s so bad. She’s so pathetic. She’s so bad.”

On July 4, Trump posted about Harris on Truth Social. “She fared poorly in the Democrat nominating process, coming in second, and losing and dropping out before even getting to Iowa, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t an ‘extremely talented’ politician!” he wrote. “Just ask her mentor, the great Willie Brown of San Francisco.”

Trump’s comments referenced Harris’s relationship with Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco, in the mid-1990s. Although right-wing critics have accused him of having an affair with Brown because he was married at the time, a 2020 Reuters fact check shows that Brown had been separated from his wife for a decade before he began dating Harris.

The White House responded to Trump’s attacks. “I think it’s disgusting, I think it’s disturbing,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Friday. “His role as vice president should be respected. He should be respected just like any other vice president in that room. It’s appalling, I’m going to be careful here, that a former president is saying that about a sitting vice president. And we need to speak out — it’s not okay.”

But following Trump’s comments, the former president’s supporters and the far-right immediately began attacking Harris.

Harris has served in elected office for decades as a district attorney, state attorney general, senator, and vice president. Yet, most of the attacks were both racist and sexist, and made few references to her sexual acts and implied they had anything to do with her success.

“Kamala is just as brain-dead as Biden,” far-right troll Laura Loomer wrote on X on Wednesday. “She pretends to be black, has a documented history of climbing the ladder by giving Willie Brown a blowjob, and has an obsession with killing children.”

“Willie Brown makes a good f–k toy,” one member of the extremist message board The Donald wrote in response to a post about the possibility of him replacing Biden as the Democratic nominee.

Far-right posters also said his race played a major role in his success.

“This is why DEI is especially dangerous: idiots like her are elevated above far more intelligent people, so she starts to believe she’s the smartest person in the room,” one of Donald’s members wrote last week.
