Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 rumours: Release date, camera specs and more

Date:

The larger cover screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 made it a notable step forward from the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Now, I’m curious as to how Samsung will take its next flip phone even further with the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6 this year.

If rumors are to be believed, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be a minor update to the 2023 model. It will likely get a new processor and perhaps a better camera, but will likely retain the same overall look as the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Samsung was one of the first companies to launch foldable phones and has maintained its strong lead in the market. According to TrendForce, Samsung accounted for about 66% of foldable phone shipments in 2023. According to Counterpoint Research, rival Huawei overtook Samsung to take the top spot in the first quarter of 2024, indicating that competition in the foldable phone market is increasing.

As I’ve written before, I expect to see new software features, better cameras, and longer software support on the Z Flip 6. Here’s a closer look at what we’re expecting to see.

Samsung usually launches new foldable smartphones in August, but it launched the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 earlier than expected in July last year. Now, a report by SamMobile suggests the same could be the case this year.

The tech blog reports that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 in Paris on July 10. If this is true, it would mark an earlier launch than last year, as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 was announced on July 26 and released in early August.

A very similar design

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to look a lot like the Galaxy Z Flip 5. That’s according to alleged leaked renderings of the phone published by gadget blog Smartprix in collaboration with serial leaker Steve HemmerstofferThe new flip phone will be almost identical to last year’s device, with just minor changes in the physical dimensions. The leak also suggests that the device may come in Mint and Lavender colour options.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was a leap in design over its previous model, stretching its external display to almost the entire upper half of the back of the device, except for a cutout for the cameras. The Motorola Razr Plus, released around the same time, also had a similarly large external display. Since rumors don’t indicate any dramatic changes to the Z Flip 6’s design, we’ll wait to see if competing clamshell foldable phones offer anything more than Samsung’s upcoming device.

Probably a new processor and a bigger battery

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

Qualcomm

Samsung typically upgrades its foldable phones with new processors that match those in its latest flagship Galaxy S phones. We expect that to be the case this year, which means the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will likely run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip.

A leak surprisingly suggests that this may not be the case. According to SamMobile, two different variants of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 have been spotted in Geekbench’s database: one with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, and the other powered by the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Geekbench is a benchmarking platform for testing a device’s performance, the results of which are logged in the database.

We won’t know for sure until Samsung announces its next Galaxy Z Flip device. If Samsung is testing a version with last year’s chip, it’s probably considering the possibility of launching a cheaper version of the Z Flip 6. This is just speculation at this point, but as my colleague David Lumb points out, putting last year’s chip in the new Z Flip could help Samsung keep the price down.

Battery life could also be boosted, with blog Galaxy Club reporting that the new phone could feature a 4,000-mAh battery. That’s slightly larger than the 3,700-mAh battery on the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which could mean longer battery life or fewer battery-draining features like location tracking or on-device generative AI.

Camera Upgrades

Camera quality is one area in which the Galaxy Z Flip has typically lagged behind Samsung’s flagships. According to Galaxy Club, Samsung could take a step towards changing this with the Galaxy Z Flip 6. According to the report, Samsung’s next flip phone will reportedly feature a 50-megapixel camera, which would make it the same resolution as the main camera sensor on the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus.

Galaxy AI seems possible

Generative Edit, which is one of Samsung’s Galaxy AI features, is being featured on the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Samsung launched Galaxy AI – its umbrella term for a variety of AI-powered software features – on the Galaxy S24 series in January. It has since expanded compatibility to other Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Galaxy AI on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 at launch.

Galaxy AI features include Generative Edit, which lets you change and move objects in photos, Live Translate which translates calls between two languages in real-time and Chat Assist which rewrites text messages in a different tone, translates them into another language or checks for spelling and grammar errors.

What I’m really hoping to see is new software features that make special use of the Galaxy Z Flip’s bendable display and cover screen. A recent blog post written by a Samsung executive suggests the company might do just that.

“The introduction of Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24 series was only the beginning,” wrote Won-Joon Choi, head of the mobile research and development office for Samsung’s mobile experience business. “To deliver a completely new and unique AI experience, we will further optimize the Galaxy AI experience for the upcoming foldable device.”

Since Samsung extended its software upgrade cycle to seven years with the Galaxy S24 series, we can expect it to do the same with its next foldables.

We’ll know more when Samsung announces the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Based on the rumors so far, it looks like it will be a minor improvement over the Z Flip 5 rather than a huge leap forward.
