There is no clear top talent to be selected first in this year’s NBA Draft, so there will be surprises right from the start. The Atlanta Hawks have the first pick, and it’s hard for anyone to predict who they will select or who they will take out of the top spot. The Washington Wizards are in second place, followed by the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons in the top five.

Two prospects from France — center Alex Sarr and small forward Zachary Risachar — are at or near the top of every draft prospect list, along with two other players who helped UConn win its second consecutive national championship — center Donovan Clingan and guard Stefan Cassel.

We’ll also see where Bronny James will begin his professional career. After completing his freshman year at USC, LeBron’s son is draft-eligible, but he’s more likely to be a Day 2 selection than hear his name called on the first night of the draft. That’s right: The NBA Draft has been expanded and will now take place over two nights.

The pieces will start moving into place tonight. The first round will begin 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) on ABC and ESPN. The second round of the draft takes place tomorrow. Here’s how you can watch all the picks without cable anywhere in the world.

How to watch the NBA Draft from anywhere using a VPN

If you’re unable to watch the NBA Draft locally, you may need another way to watch it — that’s where using a VPN can come in. A VPN is the best way to prevent your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and want to add an extra layer of privacy to your device and login.

With a VPN, you can virtually change your location on your phone, tablet, or laptop to access the draft. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has given you an IP address that incorrectly shows your location to be in a blackout zone, a VPN can fix that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout region. Most VPNs, such as our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make this really easy to do.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a valid subscription to the service you’re streaming from. You should make sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it finds circumventing properly enforced blackout restrictions.

Are you looking for other options? Don’t forget to take a look at some of the other great VPN deals available right now.

Quick tips for streaming the NBA Draft using a VPN

  • Due to four factors – your ISP, browser, video streaming provider, and VPN – your experience and success when streaming the NBA Draft may vary.
  • If you don’t see your desired location as the default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “Search for a city or country” option.
  • If you’re still having trouble watching the tournament after turning on your VPN and setting it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — such as Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll need to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (such as your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network will now appear in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after installing the cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, as both devices will appear to be in the right location.
  • And remember, browsers can often reveal location even if you use a VPN, so make sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We generally recommend Brave.
