Motorola Razr+ and Razr (2024) review: Polished folding flips

Motorola has finally given the new Razr an IPX8 rating, matching its competitors. This means that these phones will be safe if you accidentally submerge them in water or use them in the rain, although the “X” indicates that it is still not rated for dust protection. In this sense, Motorola’s hinge mechanism is 30 percent smaller in these models and is supposed to offer better protection against dust.

It also makes the phone easier to open and close, and while it’s an upgrade over the 2023 version, it still requires a little more forceful hand movement than you might expect. My main complaint? I wish there was a small recess on one side of the phone that made it easier to stick my thumb in to open it. That might just be a problem Me The problem is that since I have big hands and therefore thick fingers; it’s a bit painful to get my thumb stuck in the middle of the folded screen.

Oh, and I know there are a lot of people who don’t like the crease on the display where the device folds. Yes, it’s there. I only notice it mostly when the brightness is too high, or when I’m using dark mode in my apps. It doesn’t bother me, but it might be a deal-breaker for you.

Fold Them Up

The biggest advantage of a folding flip smartphone is that you get a compact phone that will fit in any pocket, but you can get the traditional big screen experience by opening it in an instant. Motorola is improving this experience and offering more ways to take advantage of the design.

For example, you can hold the phone slightly open like a tent and have the outer cover screen’s always-on display show you relevant information. Taking a picture? The cover screen shows the person a preview so they know what they look like before they tap the shutter button. You can also do a number of things by folding the device, such as taking calls in speaker mode, talking to Google’s Gemini chatbot, and controlling music playback.
