It is a good idea to download Google Maps offline. Know how to do it


You’re headed somewhere you’ve never driven before and suddenly your internet stops working. When it comes to directions on Google Maps, it’s usually okay to not have internet, because whatever route you’re following will still work even without service.

But if you have to stop somewhere or change the route, you will face trouble.

In the US, you won’t always find good service or any internet at all, especially in national parks or on long highways in remote areas. No internet means you can’t add stops to your route, like gas stations or markets. No internet means you can’t find a new route if you get lost. No internet means you can’t go anywhere other than your current destination. You’re stuck on the route you’re on — and that’s it.

How to download Google Maps offline

First, you won’t be downloading Google Maps in its entirety. Instead, before your trip, you’ll want to download a specific area, which could be a city, county, or region where you’ll be spending time and may not have service on your phone.

To download offline maps in Google Maps, open the Google Maps app on iOS or Android and tap your profile photo in the top right (you must be logged into your Google account for this to work). In the menu that appears, tap Select Offline maps > Your own map.

You can download many Google Maps areas offline.

Use your fingers to position the map within the rectangular boundary you want to download. Use one finger to move across the map, and use a two-finger pinch to zoom in and out. As you move across the map, you’ll see how much storage space the download will take up on your phone. Once you’re satisfied with the area, tap download,

You must be connected to Wi-Fi to download maps. You can only download a maximum map of 250 MB (which would appear to be approximately the size of Maine in the selected map).

You’ll now be able to use Google Maps even when you’re offline in the area you downloaded — and only in that area. You won’t get super accurate travel times or alternate route options because traffic and other road issues aren’t taken into account, but you’ll get a general estimate of how long your trip should take. Transit, biking, and walking directions also aren’t available offline — only driving directions are.
