Elon Musk’s Company X may be testing a ‘Dislike’ button on iOS to downvote posts

Date:

X (formerly Twitter) is probably testing a new feature that aims to increase engagement on the platform by allowing users on iPhone to downvote posts. According to claims on social media, the feature may appear as a ‘dislike’ option in the form of a heart-break icon instead of a downward arrow like Reddit. The experiment was first reported in 2021 and the recent discovery of code references related to the feature indicates its ongoing testing.

Dislike button on X

According to a post made by user @aaronp613 on the microblogging platform, the feature to dislike posts may soon be introduced on the X app for the iOS platform. Code references have reportedly been found that point to a broken heart emoji-style icon for disliking, similar to the Like option that appears as a heart icon.

Strings of text are also visible in the app’s code. According to the user, one of the strings reads, “Do you want to downvote this post?”, while another simply reads “Downvote this post”. However, it’s unclear whether the ability to downvote will be available for both posts and replies or just the former, given that the code only mentions “post”.

X – when it was Twitter – first announced that it would be testing the downvote feature on iOS in 2021. It was reported as part of a “small research experiment” that added upvote and downvote options to replies. The microblogging platform confirmed that downvotes were not public, while likes were viewable by everyone, until an update last month hid them.

Notably, another user @P4mui posted a video clip of the alleged downvoting option in the function. However, the clip shows that the option is only for replies, not for posts on the microblogging platform.

Hidden Choice

Apart from the rumoured ‘dislike’ feature, Elon Musk’s ex has recently decided to hide ‘likes’ from the platform. This means that posts liked by a user will not appear on their profile. like tab. As a result, the entire section has been removed. This is one of the many changes introduced to the microblogging platform since Elon Musk’s acquisition in 2022.
