Dubai Customs launches blockchain platform for reduced paperwork and tamper-proof data sharing

Dubai Customs has launched a new blockchain platform to optimise commercial operations within the region, which is increasingly seen as a pro-technology marketplace. In an effort to tackle some of the barriers that have hindered the entrepreneurial sector in Dubai, the Customs Department is exploring the use of blockchain technology to enhance transparency and ease the process of sharing data in a tamper-proof manner. The blockchain platform was unveiled on Monday, and is said to offer secure, efficient, economic schemes, as well as tech-driven logistics initiatives.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zones Corporation, has called the upcoming blockchain platform a ‘huge leap’ in improving Dubai’s trade and commercial operations.

“We believe that the adoption of modern technologies such as blockchain will improve the business environment and strengthen Dubai’s position as a major hub for global trade,” Sulayem said in a prepared statement.

Blockchain technology, also known as distributed ledger technology, stores data on multiple nodes – which prevents concentration of data on a single server like traditional blockchains. This makes it more difficult for malicious hackers to break into the network. Moreover, any data stored on a blockchain network leaves a permanent track, which brings transparency to businesses.

Dubai authorities are also looking to leverage other blockchain capabilities, such as tracking goods in real-time and curbing incidents of fraud and counterfeiting.

However, this is not the first time Dubai has explored the use of blockchain technology. In May, it unveiled a strategy aimed at making the region one of the top ten economies well versed with metaverse technology.

Dubai previously selected the Solana Foundation to provide the blockchain infrastructure for its free economic zone, to be launched in October 2023, called the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), to help businesses operating from there grow their businesses.
