DD Kisan to launch two AI anchors to read news for farmers on its ninth anniversary

DD Kisan, the Doordarshan channel dedicated to sharing news and information for farmers in the country, is going to embrace the wave of artificial intelligence (AI) as it is preparing to bring two AI anchors on the channel. The move will make it the first government TV channel in India to introduce AI-powered digital human replicas to present news and information. The AI ​​anchors are being introduced on the occasion of completion of nine years of DD Kisan. It is worth mentioning that the channel was launched on May 26, 2015.

DD Kisan AI’s new anchor

According to a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the two new AI anchors have been named AI Krish and AI Bhumi. Both of them will appear for the first time on DD Kisan on Sunday on the occasion of its ninth anniversary. According to the ministry, these anchors can speak fifty Indian and foreign languages.

The ministry introduced AI anchors as computers that can look and work like humans. It further said that AI Krish and AI Bhumi can read news 24 hours and 365 days without any break or fatigue. It is worth mentioning that DD Kisan is an all India channel which is broadcast in different states of the country in their regional languages.

This channel shares news and information on latest agricultural research, trends in agriculture and other topics at national and global level. MandisInformation related to weather changes and government schemes. Some of the popular shows on the channel include Krishi Darshan, Mandi Khabar, Mausam Khabar and Chaupal Charcha.

What are AI anchors?

AI anchors are essentially computer-generated digital avatars that resemble humans. These avatars are powered by different AI technologies that allow them to have text-to-voice generation capabilities as well as lip, eye, head, and hand movements in sync with the words being spoken.

The rise of AI anchors in India

India saw its first AI anchor in early 2023, when the India Today Group introduced Sana for its Aaj Tak channel. Following her launch, Odisha-based OTV introduced AI-powered news anchor Lisa. Karnataka’s Power TV also launched AI anchor Soundarya last year. India Today later announced five more AI anchors for its regional language channels.

However, India is not among the first countries to introduce this technology. China became the first country to introduce AI news anchors in 2018 when Xinhua news agency launched two AI synthetic anchors.
