Why is freelance work so popular nowadays?

Even during economic uncertainty and with many professionals re-evaluating their work priorities, companies continue to face talent shortages. Recent data from Upwork shows that 64 million Americans worked freelance in the 12 months before the October 24, 2023 and November 9, 2023 voting dates. That’s 39% of the US workforce, the highest ever.

When asked their reasons for freelancing, respondents most often said, “having flexibility in their schedule,” “controlling their financial future,” and “working from a location of their choice.” 60% of the freelancers surveyed work remotely, while 32% of non-freelance professionals work remotely.

“In 2024, emerging technologies like generative AI are having a major impact on the skills-based economy,” Kelly Monahan, managing director of the Upwork Research Institute, wrote in a 2024 report on in-demand skills. “Of course commercial demand for these kinds of skills is growing, but we’re also seeing a complementary effect, whereby AI technology is driving demand for all kinds of jobs in our marketplace.”

Methodology of Upwork Survey

Upwork said the skills data was taken from the Upwork database and is based on US freelancer earnings from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. Each skill had at least 250 projects with active work during this period. Year-over-year growth was estimated by comparing freelancer earnings in 2023 to freelancer earnings in the same period in 2022.
