‘RockU2024’ leak: Nearly 10 billion passwords stolen by hackers

RockYou2024 10 billion stolen passwords leaked online

According to the CyberNews research team, The largest password file, “RockYou2024”, contains 9,948,575,739 unique plaintext passwordsThe password compilation file was published on the popular hacking forum BreachForums on July 4 by a user with the username “obamacare.”

Since registering in late May 2024, this user has been seen sharing leaked passwords from a variety of sources. His previous leaks include an employee database from law firm Simmons & Simmons, a lead from an online casino AskGamblers, and student applications for Rowan College in Burlington County.

Apparently, the RockYou2024 compilation includes an older credential database known as RockYou2021, which contained 8.4 billion plaintext passwords. However, the threat actors developed this dataset by searching the internet for data leaks and added 1.5 billion new passwords during the period from 2021 to 2024, increasing the dataset by 15 percent.

The latest RockU2024 version appears to contain stolen credentials possibly collected from over 4,000 databases over the past twenty years.

“Essentially, the RockYou2024 leak is a compilation of real passwords used by individuals around the world. Revealing that many passwords to threat actors substantially increases the risk of credential stuffing attacks,” the researchers explained.

“Threat actors could exploit the RockYou2024 password compilation to perform brute-force attacks and gain unauthorized access to various online accounts used by individuals using passwords included in the dataset.”

This could include anything from online and offline services to internet-facing cameras and industrial hardware. Along with other databases leaked on hacker forums and marketplaces, researchers believe RockYou2024 could be responsible for data breaches, financial fraud, and identity theft.

Preventive measures against RockU2024

To protect against RockYou2024, the CyberNews team recommends some preventive measures for affected individuals and organizations to ensure their accounts are protected from attackers:

  • Immediately reset passwords for all accounts associated with the leaked passwords. It is strongly recommended to choose strong, unique passwords that are not reused across multiple platforms.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible. This enhances security by requiring additional verification beyond a password.
  • Use password manager software to create and store complex passwords securely. Password managers reduce the risk of reusing passwords across different accounts.

Additionally, those who want to check if their credentials were exposed in the latest RockYou stolen credentials database can do so by using the CyberNews Leaked Password Checker.
